The mission of this organization is to promote the Katahdin breed in Texas, support the unique needs of Katahdin producers in an educational fashion, to share knowledge, and to encourage standards of excellence.
Texas is the largest producer of sheep in the US and has consistently been a leader in this endeavor for more than 100 years. In recent years, Texas has seen an increase in hair sheep numbers to the point that 80% of all lambs born in the state are hair sheep. The factors contributing to this increase have created an expansion opportunity for Katahdin sheep. In the past couple of years, KHSI has supported three events in Texas where the Katahdin breed was highlighted. During these events, information about the breed was very well-received by the public and resulted in many questions and requests about where breeding stock could be purchased. There appeared to be an unmet need in Texas for a community of Katahdin producers committed to the promotion of Katahdin sheep. Additionally, there are factors unique to raising sheep in Texas (e.g., a broad spectrum of climate zones, getting assistance from county extension offices, state sponsored university support systems, traversing great distances when taking sheep to market or purchasing hay/feed, etc). Five Texas Katahdin producers recognized these opportunities and challenges could be better navigated through a supportive local Katahdin community. Therefore, the Texas Katahdin Hair Sheep Association was created on 6 September 2023.
